Who's Dharavi’s Boss? | Documentary Film

Dharavi, Asia’s largest shanty-town, made famous by the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and home to nearly a million people, is slated for demolition and redevelopment by a consortium headed by the Adani Group. What does this mean for Dharavi’s residents? Who will be re-housed and at what cost? How many hundreds of thousands of people will become homeless and jobless?

Dharavi is a major manufacturing centre, with leather-workers, textile manufacturers, artisans, pottery workers, caterers, embroiderers, recycling businesses and deliveries that service the rest of Mumbai. What will happen to the hundreds of thousands of current residents and workers of Dharavi who have been deemed ineligible for housing in the revamped Dharavi?

People are fighting back against the government and Adani. This video shows their fighting spirit. They ask ‘who's the boss of Dharavi?’ Their campaign slogan is ‘remove Adani, save Dharavi’.

Dharavi Ka Dada Kaun: English version

Dharavi, one of the world's largest slums and densely-populated areas, located in the heart of Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, is being sought to be redeveloped on an unprecedented scale. The contract to redevelop Dharavi has been given to the Adani group, headed by Gautam Adani, one of the world's richest men who is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Opposition politicians allege that rules were tweaked to favour the Adani group. An estimated 500,000 residents are considered "illegal" and would be displaced. Many residents of Dharavi oppose the redevelopment project. We spoke to dozens of individuals to put together this 43-minute documentary film, which includes two original music videos.
